- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 October 2022Size Name: Interrupteur rougeColour Name: BlackVerified PurchaseTL;DR: Swap the switches for something like gateron milky yellow pros if you want linears, they have added case foam and plate foam that means this thing sounds amazing for almost no effort. Sub-100GBP value king in my opinion. Software is still bad though.
The RK84 shot to fame a few months ago after a bunch of different youtubers made videos about it as a budget "thock" sounding keyboard, comparing it to boards by EPOMAKER and Keychron to name just 2. More modern releases are currently stealing its thunder as they pushed features like preinstalled foam, pre lubed stabilisers and rotary dials.
However, Royal kludge has updated the RK84 and added some of those features to this board without increasing the price, and markedly improving its performance from a keyboard enthusiast standpoint.
Some of the things that came as a pleasant surprise to me were the addition of plate foam (Which sits between the PCB and top plate) and case foam (which sits between the PCB and case).
both of these are mods commonly featured in videos about modding the RK84 from about a year ago, but it should be mentioned that they are no longer necessary!
Indeed I have done very little to this board aside from replacing the switches and shoving just a little bit more foam into the case and I would describe this keyboard as the best sounding of the 4 I own! (beating out my modded Ducky one2 mini with Tangerine switches and a case swap)
The stabilisers come prelubed pretty well, I've only modded the spacebar to remove the rattle, the others have all been 95% of the way there from stock.
In terms of bad points, the software is still pretty cheaply made. Its an inhouse program from royal kludge that doesnt allow for the extensive key remapping I am used to. (Caps lock cannot become a Fn key for example) However outside of setting the RGB mode to one of the 3 or 4 tasteful ones on offer (There are about 50, not sure why, they aren't a feature and must have taken money and time to code) you probably wont interact with it all that much. Why they couldnt make this keyboard compatible with VIA I don't know.
The keycaps are kind of cheap as well, but they are doubleshot PBT so the legends wont rub off of them, even if the sublegends are dye sub and probably will eventually, though spending 100GBP on a keycap set for a 70 quid board seems like a false economy anyway!
What ISN'T a false economy however, is replacing the godawful switches that come with this board. Don't worry about getting Red (Linear) Blue (Clicky) or Brown ("tactile") as they will all be terrible. I got the reds and they aren't even going to be worth lubing. They have a non-standard housing that cant be opened by my cherry-style opener and they feel and sound terrible. Lube is usually around 10GBP for a pot of Krytox 205g0 and I replaced the keys with Gateron Milky yellow Pros for just over 21GBP anyway and they came pre-lubed to a standard that means they haven't needed lubing at all.
It probably took me a total of 10 mins to swap out the switches using the included tools and it has transformed this keyboard.
Wireless modes are there, I don't have a use for them as it sits at my desktop and it gets used for gaming while plugged in. I tired playing a rhythm game over the 2.4Ghz and I could notice the lag, so don't game on it wirelessly.
The USB pass through to the ports on top is nice, it's not a feature that the PRO version of this keyboard has and I admit I do use it for popping a USB stick into to put a word doc onto. It's not very fast though so I wouldn't do large file transfers.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 March 2023Size Name: Interrupteur rougeColour Name: WhiteVerified PurchaseA good keyboard for normal use or even gaming
Negatives: - Software is poor in features, could be better
- Keycaps wearing out fast using the keyboard for gaming wasd got really smooth
- I wish it could have more steps in the Speed of animations and better colors as in RGB mode it seems really childish with poor colors, but to be fair it is much better in other settings.
- Cannot configure your own color even with software.
Positives: + compact and has additional steps to change its angle
+ Retractable frame for Skeleton like style
+ Some lightning settings are nice to have for this price.
+ Has 2 USB A that can charge something which is really good feature to have
4.0 out of 5 starsA good keyboard for normal use or even gamingFairly built keyboard

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 May 2021Size Name: Interrupteur rougeColour Name: WhiteVerified PurchaseOver the last few months I have been through about 12 different Mechanical and chicklet style keyboards on a seemingly never ending quest to find the perfect Keeb. I still haven't got there but this one was my absolute favourite of all of them.
I had the Red switch version and it was lovely. The switches were nicely lubed so weren't too loud and didn't feel gritty. The stabilisers were a touch on the loud/lose side, louder than my Keychron K8, but not at bad as some I have tried out at all. There wasn't too much in the way of pinging from the case so I suspect there MAY be some sort of sound deadening in there but I don't know as I didn't open the case to check.
It would have been nice to have seen PBT keycaps rather than ABS but at this price point that's fairly rare so I can't really deduct any points for that however adding a cheapo set of PBT keycaps would bring this board up to the £100 range and I still think that would be a fair overall price for it.
You get Bluetooth connectivity for upto three devices which works without a hitch. I switched it between my work laptop and person gaming PC daily and it is quick to change and respond. If you leave the board alone for a bit it will switch off the BT to save battery and like most BT boards there is a second or so delay in it re-activating and re-connecting but nothing as major as I saw with the Keychron mentioned earlier.
Backlighting is decent and bright and has many different settings for how you want the lights to work or how bright they are and the colour. I personally liked the multicoloured one, I think it works well with the white.
The board has many different media functions and things but I didn't test any of them as I don't care about that sort of stuff. I would imagine it works fine though, this is a very well put together board.
The case does not have flick out feet but you do get magnetic feet which attach to the back. These work well and put the board into a really nice typing angle and if you want to game you can just flick them off and it's in a decent gaming angle. Kick out feet would have been better but this solution works just fine.
There is a band around the case which you can remove so that you can have either floating keys or sunken ones, whichever floats your boat. It's pretty hard to get off but this means it's not lose and rattly, adding sound to the board.
Battery life if good. I only had to charge it once. I think you get something like 10 hours if you have all the RGB going all the time but if you turn it off you will get many many more hours. Not sure of the official figure but you'll be good for a week or more between charges I would think. Also depends on how much you used it too.
I think this keyboard is an excellent starting point in the world of mechanical boards. It's hot swappable so you can modify it to your hearts content, it's wireless so you can use it with multiple devices, it's got all the function and arrow keys so you don't need to worry about annoying modifiers and at the same time it's more compact than a traditional TKL board. There are some things which I would like to see improved, Options without backlight, Black option, PBT Keycaps and quieter stabilisers but overall this has been my favourite board out of all the mechanical ones I have tested so far.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 February 2025Size Name: Interrupteur marronColour Name: BlackVerified PurchaseI wanted a solid, sturdy Bluetooth mechanical keyboard to pair with my tablet for those times I needed to write but was away from my desktop and wired Steelseries M400. I did have a Tecknet but the Royal Kludge is much better. Connectivity is excellent with both the Bluetooth and the wireless. You can also use it wired via the USB-C port but I tend not to. It charges up quickly enough and a full charge lasts for many hours. Whereas the Tecknet felt cheap and a bit flimsy, the RK is a bit like my Steelseries' chunky younger brother - built like a tank with satisfyingly tactile, clunky keys/switches. If it was stolen or lost or, more improbably, dropped by me into a murky canal, I would have no hesitation in buying another one immediately.
