Clever, Well Made Metal Bodied Telephoto Smartphone Camera Lens

Clever, Well Made Metal Bodied Telephoto Smartphone Camera Lens
Superb little lens, lovingly supplied in a good branded box and complete with its own zippered custom made carrying case. Along with the case you obviously receive the lens itself, a universal clip for attaching the lens to the phone, a small eye cup, a cleaning cloth and a selfie tripod. The lens is a good metal affair and features both a magnification ring and a focus ring, both of which move smoothly and fluidly and coupled with the high quality optics ensure a good picture, now being metal and as it's quite a long lens in order to obtain such high zoom magnification levels you will need to support with your hand, the clip works well to keep in place the camera lens end but then you balance at the end for a nice stable shot. The tripod is plastic and designed specifically for use in balancing the lens around its central point and does the job well, we had some great pictures on my partners Samsung utilising this and found it very easy to use and adjust to get the best out of the lens. To be honest when i purchased this i wasn't really expecting much but when it arrived ontime and i started using it on my Samsung s10+ the quality of rhe products really shows.
Zooming in with just my phone makes the images look so fuzzy but using this i can see things so far away and still be able to make out what it is. It take some time to get used to but like anything photography thats just the way it is i do recommended turning off auto focusing on your phone as that was the only issue i ran into i focused with the lence then my phone auto focused and messed it up.

My conclusion an amazing product well made and well priced with surprisingly good pictures you can get from using this i would 100% recommend

I purchased this monocular to be able to capture on film so idiots using a roundabout near us as a drift track, late at night. I had tried a cheap one from eBay but you get nought for nought and it gave no greater magnification that the naked eye.

This monocular does provide magnification. Not as much as I had hoped but for the price it is not bad. Getting it set up to film with a mobile phone that is another matter. We have tried my Samsung Galaxy S9, my daughters IPhone 12, her old IPhone six and five, as well as my wife's Google pixel 4a. After much fiddling, you can get an image but any sort of movement and it is all in vain. By movement, I mean trying to touch the screen to start the phone recording. Even the most gentle of touches can throw it out.

It is a great game, take turns to try and engage the record function but not make the phone lose the very marginal sweet spot that allows the phone camera to see through the monocular lens.

If not wanting to use with a mobile phone, the monocular is quite good, ok rather than outstanding zoom, allows you to more clearly view nature. It is easier to carry that binoculars'.

At £67.99, and with largely good reviews on Amazon, I didn't expect an amazing zoom telephoto lens, but I hoped for a product that would let me take wildlife photos on my iPhone 14 Pro of a reasonable quality. Initial efforts were hopeless, so I set up a careful test to see if it is possible to take good, clear images with this lens.

I sent an email to Apexel customer support but have not received an answer, so i have done my own tests.

I picked my subject, then set up a full-size tripod (the one that comes with the lens is rubbish), and mounted my iPhone on the tripod using a Smallrig cage so it would be totally stable. I took photographs at about 3 metres, about 2 metres, about 1 metre and close-ups with the iPhone's native lenses. I used the same 3 m and 2m distances for the Apexel telephoto lens but the minimum distance from subject is just over 2 metres (this is not very good for telephoto lens).

I used auto focus for the native iPhone lens, but you have to use the manual focus on the Apexel lens. This is EXTREMELY difficult to use, especially when on maximum zoom (which I was using). There is no image stabilisation, and the focus ring is ridiculously sensitive, so a movement of about 1mm makes a big difference. Then the depth of field is poor, so subjects go in and out of focus very easily.

The best I could do with the phone on a tripod is enclosed, with the native iPhone picture alongside. The iPhone pics were from closer, but that shouldn't make such a huge difference. In fact the quality of the Apexel pictures at 2.2 metres isn't even as good as the iPhone 3x telephoto lens at the same distance (blown up), so what's the point of it?

This lens is completely useless to me, but I'm too late to return it as Apexel take too long to respond.

Difficult to focus and poor resulting definition.

I purchased this lens as reviews were reasonably strong. First impressions on opening are good, bracket is metal as is the lens itself, the tripod however is a little flimsy. Unfortunately though I could not get the bracket to fit flush against the camera lens, this allowed a small amount of light to enter from the rear. I tried a number of different approaches but sadly none were successful so I have had to return the item.
If the lens is compatible with your phone it would make a valuable addition, I would suggest though that you purchase a higher quality tripod - or better still a gamble.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great lens for the steady handed
Reviewed in Sweden on 9 February 2021
This lens is a cheap alternative to more professional camera equipment. These photos were taken around noon in Gothenburg early February with an iphone 6. So decent light conditions but a pretty outdated camera. All of them were full zoom. The blue tit was roughly 3 meters away, the woodcock 10 m and the cormorant 20m. Given these conditions I am very happy with the results.

As with anything there are some drawbacks and I will list them below:

It's not super easy to get it to sit right over the camera. I almost always need to move it and adjust to get it right, which takes about a minute. Is that a lot of time? Depends on your application.

There are tons of micro jitter. Getting a focused photo is hard and required a steady hand or something to lean the lens on. The tripod works but it's too small for nature photography unless you want to lay down in the snow. A larger tripod or a stabilizer is a must if you want to take quick photos or video. Fortunately the design allows for third party accessories.

The bag only fits the lens. It would really be great if you could put the lens, clip and tripod in the same bag, but you can't.

The clip doesn't work with all phone cases. It works with mine, but I've seen other reviews saying they needed to remove the case.

That's pretty much it. For the price this is a great product and with steady hands and a bit of patience you can get some good photos. I'd never gotten close enough to take the photo of the woodcock without it and I'm glad I had it with me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Apexel toujours aussi qualitatif, j’adore!
Reviewed in France on 22 December 2020

Easy to setup and use. Get yourself a remote for the phone as on maximum zoom, the vibrations of the camera when you push the button affect the picture...

Also a bit tricky to clamp the lens to the camera, but that is a question of practice.
